251 pounds. That was a peak weight for me, and neither looked nor felt good. But it was my doctor who really drove the message home when she asked whether I was going to change or whether 300 pounds was in my near future. For a guy with a stressful job and two young daughters, the prospect of not living a healthy life wasn’t just about looks, it was about so much more.

I started working out with Scott at BodySmith, using his service as a means for weekly therapy sessions and improvements in my strength and conditioning primarily. I just never took it as seriously as I should have regarding nutrition. After my wake up call doctors appointment I finally talked and relayed my concern about my weight. Scott’s response was simple: listen to me, do what I say, and follow the program.

I did just that. Over the course of about 5 months, I lost 32 pounds. But that’s just a number. Really, what I experienced was a healthier lifestyle. I made some necessary lifestyle changes, adopted better habits and took the program seriously. Who would have thought that a tailored regime focused on diet and exercise would produce results? 😂
I’m running better and faster, feel less sore, I have more energy, and I am generally happier. It was a valuable experience. I can probably talk specifics on how many pounds I lost or fat loss versus muscle gain, but it’s more than just the specific metrics. It was setting a goal, accomplishing it, and, in the end, making sustainable lifestyle changes to help me live a better, healthier life. And I couldn’t have done it without a great group of trainers at BodySmith Personal Training.

Y’know that out of control feeling when you first clearly see in pictures how big you’ve gotten? That depressing feeling can stick with you for years until you feel like your body (and the food you can’t stop eating) are the ones that are truly in charge. The lie feels real.

I have had whole body chronic pain since I was 14. Over the years, I allowed it to keep me from physical activity. My demanding job as a nurse also added to the difficulty, especially during night shift. I tried crazy strict diets a few times which worked, but they didn’t teach me to be in control of my own mind/food issues. Muscle gain also certainly didn’t happen. In the end, I would just felt deprived, fall off the wagon, and end up bigger than I began.

My successful weight loss journey started in January of 2014 when I was a size 20 and weighed 205 pounds. We had been relocated to PA a few years earlier by the Air Force, and my husband had just been diagnosed with a debilitating illness. It was looking like the rest of my life might be spent caregiving for my spouse. No one is prepared for that. I quit my nursing job once I saw the severity of his condition and we started in on our new normal. For the first time in my adult life, I didn’t have to work as hard to lose weight because of grief and caregiver stress. It’s not a diet I would recommend though. Cooking healthier and walking more also became the norm once things stabilized. Since then, we moved back to Kansas City to be near my family and we began a treatment called prolotherapy that worked for both my chronic pain and my husband’s. By 2017 my husband (despite the dire prognosis we were given) was well enough to become a college student, and we also became parents to the most amazing little boy!

By 2018, I was down to 170 pounds and ready to go further. I found Scott and BodySmith online by quite literally googling “best personal trainers.” I liked that he is a college educated and certified personal trainer and that he is willing to spend the time to get to know me. Scott went over my diet with me and we decided on a doable calorie based plan. He also assigned me to my trainer, Kent Masters, and we got to work. Kent makes sure we hit the balance between working hard and avoiding injury. He watches out for me and cheers me on. I’m a bit of a klutz in the gym and have to relearn moves almost every time I do them. But I stuck with it, so if I can do this then anybody can. I’ve now lost 20 more pounds, my chronic pain has lessened even more, and I feel strong. Heck, I don’t think I even had this much muscle in high school. Even my feet lost weight!

It has taken almost half my life for me to realize that I can be in charge of my own health. This is a lifelong journey and my hard work hasn’t ended. But one thing’s for sure, I’m never looking back.

Tarak Devkota

Sometime in 2018, on a lazy Saturday morning, I arose from bed, looked in the mirror, and felt like crap. I knew at that moment that I needed to do something quickly to change course so I called Scott like a drowning person reaching for life preserver.

Throughout my life, I played every sport imaginable and this kept me in great condition. At some point, I began to focus more on my professional goals, the creation of the Devkota Law firm LLC, and completely disregarded my physical well-being. A high level of stress and poor eating habits exacerbated the problem.  I began to workout with Scott three days a week, early in the morning (before I could make any excuses not to go to the gym).

In the beginning, I hated waking up early to go work out, but Scott and his great team of trainers have changed my life so much that it is something I look forward to every week. Working out is not easy, but the benefits are so great that I question how was I living without Scott’s personal training in the past.

Some of the benefits I have experienced:

  • My productivity in the office has increased, including higher quality cognitive processing and stress management.
  • I’ve lost 3 inches off my waste and my clothes fit much better which has allowed me to change my wardrobe to the latest men’s fashions.
  • My performance on the softball and soccer fields has dramatically improved and no one notices that more than my teammates which is a great feeling. I was never a home run hitter (until now) nor a goal scorer but the decrease in body fat, increased muscle mass, joint strengthening, and cardio has allowed me to play competitively, again.  It has truly renewed and extended my ability to play sports.

I see no reason to stop working out with Scott’s team if I’m going to continue to have a higher quality of life. Thank you BodySmith! 💪

Aryn Roth

Diagnosed with MS, I realize the importance of maintaining all working body parts to keep physically moving forward. My general dislike of mega-gyms, exercise equipment and organized group workouts left me with few options. Also, I’m not a fan of wearing skintight workout outfits.

A friend suggested her personal trainer at a nearby accessible-sized gym, BodySmith Personal Training. I made an unannounced visit & found myself visiting with Scott Smith concerning a possible personal trainer and schedule to meet my needs, clarifying that I did not want to lose weight or build overly sculpted muscles.

My personal goals: strengthen core & muscles, improve flexibility & balance, increase overall good health. I have the daily diet plan down to a personal science. One plan does not fit all.

Scott suggested David Rodriguez as a good personal trainer for me to work with and start on a plan with my requests in mind. YIKES THE START. The first visits were rather foreign to me, using unfamiliar equipment & attempting feats of exercise never before tried by me.

With a sense of humor and David’s assistance I was able to move forward, altering certain routines, getting rep ranges dialed in, progressively increasing weight loads and adding new variations of equipment. The answer is “yes I feel it in my core” as well as multiple other muscles not known to me prior to this work.

If I question an exercise as to its’ specific importance, David has the answers. Plus he has the ability to adjust an exercise not in my playbook and constantly cue those reminders: chest out, shoulders back, belly in, booty forward and don’t forget to breath. Moving forward is one multi-task step at a time. I favor the routines I make it through, using increased strength and staying balanced. (Balanced for me is not falling or getting vertigo), then surprise we have reached the end of another session. This is big time!

In summation, Body Smith has become a regular part of my positive health plan. Another small wonder, me working out on a regular basis.

MARISSA MATHSON

Prior to working out at BodySmith, I was sluggish, tired, with constant headaches and back pain. Every morning I would wake up and never feel 100%. It caused me some anxiety and depression, wondering if I was ever going to feel normal again. My mind was always racing: Why am I always so tired? Why is my back constantly hurting in that spot? Do I have some sort of medical problem? I even went as far as going to several doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists, convinced that something was wrong with me. Fast forward a year later — I’m looking through my medical records after a doctors appointment when I noticed that I had gained 35 pounds since my first physical 4 years ago (the year I moved to Kansas City and started my career).

I was shocked, because I had always considered myself a relatively healthy person.  After thinking about my habits over the last few years, it made sense. It was hard for me to adjust to a new city, new job, new friends; and I lost my healthy habits along the way. After a long day of work, all I wanted to do was lay on the couch and order a pizza. After this realization, I tried a few gyms and studios but nothing would stick. It wasn’t until I got engaged in the Summer of 2018 that I knew I had to change my habits. I was going to walk down that aisle feeling my best!

I found BodySmith through a quick Google search and was intrigued by the good reviews. I submitted my information and got a call from the owner, Scott, within an hour. We set up a consultation and I sat down and talked with him for an hour about my concerns and goals. The consultation alone was so informative, and it made me so excited and confident, knowing that I had someone on my side to help me get to where I wanted to be. I decided this was the place for me and I began my journey with BodySmith.

Not only did the trainers hold me accountable for my workouts, but I learned so much about proper training, nutrition, and how my body works. Every trainer is there to cheer you on and give you a high-five you when you meet a new milestone. They pushed me to my limit but also made me feel confident and comfortable at the same time. I never left the gym without feeling like I just had the most rewarding workout. And the best part of all — after only a few weeks, I noticed a major decrease in my body aches/pains and tiredness.

For me personally, it was not just about weight loss. It was about my health, my confidence, and honestly just waking up and feeling GOOD every morning. I can’t thank the team enough for everything they did for me. I felt great on my wedding day and will now continue to use the tools they gave me to work out on my own and set new goals for myself!

TOP TRANSFORMATIONS OF 2018!

Megan Carnes

I met Scott in March of 2018 for an initial consultation that I had put off for several months prior because deep inside I believed it was going to be another failed attempt at a “new year, new me” and I was about to throw down some money yet never see it pay off–literally.

I left that first day nothing shy of intimidated and scared because for the past decade of my adult life, I had ridden the waves of the, all too familiar, shame spiral when it came to my physical and emotional health. So what did I do? I went and ate. It was a cycle I was sure I would never break—the compulsive thoughts on where I wanted to “binge” and many times hitting up three places to get every item that brought me solace. Sitting alone in my house with an incomprehensible excitement as I laid out all of my goodies and then the feverish way I would devour every last bite. Always wanting more. Never wanting anyone to see. Then, at the second the frenzy was over, the inevitable shaming and regret: What did you just do? You are such a fat ass. This was the last time. I will start tomorrow.

Now hear me: I live a great life. I have been active (enough) to keep my health in check, I go to therapy regularly and have been blessed in a multitude of ways, but certain identities you create for yourself in the midst of childhood trauma, adolescent growing pains or shattered relationships aren’t just willed away, but after that initial meeting with Scott, it felt like he was my missing piece and I showed back up.

What he was able to offer me was the tools I needed to be successful. This new arsenal included changing up my routine consistently, pushing me to my limits, aiding in navigating nutritional overhauls, and lastly, truly listening to what my body needed and supporting me as the champion I long needed to build back the confidence I had all along.

Now, only six months later, here I am, not only more confident, but also leaner (down 7% body fat and 15 pounds fat mass), in control of my nutrition and much stronger (gained three pounds of muscle mass too!). However, this strength extends beyond the muscles I can now see with each step or that I enjoy glancing at before I step into the shower (seriously! who would have thought?!) but it exudes from me in my work, in my relationships and in my interior world when I am confronted with the same demons or thoughts of doubt. When old habits rear their ugly heads. Now, instead of passively waiting for the tide to turn or some external, yet fleeting, pleasure to calm my storm, I am in control. Sure, it isn’t easier, but I, for the first time in my life, believe in myself.

I have finally tasted the good life and I look forward every day to truly living it. I am flattered by the compliments on my physique from friends and family, I am empowered when I drive past Taco Bell on a stressful day, and fully satisfied when I am home on a Saturday instead of closing down the bars–I mean, that isn’t totally past me but maybe with less debauchery ☺ But no matter, I would not be here writing this if it wasn’t for the enthusiasm, expertise and friendship that Scott has given me these past six months, and it isn’t over yet…

Growing up, I had never been exposed to exercise and activities as I know them today.  Sports or personal fitness was not part of my routine or environment and always seemed outside my normal “comfort zone.”  After college, my work and personal life often included travel, eating out, and social settings… a lot of fun, but also the settings for indulging in a lot of food and drinks.  I eventually found myself trying to find ways to become more active and to lead a healthier lifestyle.  I began to pick up running and found that I really enjoyed the benefits that came along with it, especially the aspect of going at my own pace and doing it within my own “comfort zone.”

After really gaining some confidence and strength in my running, I began working my way from a 5k, to a 10k, to eventually a half marathon.  It was a great feeling and I was hooked!  But, then I found that I wanted to push myself in other areas such as strength training.  I joined the local gym, but felt that I was outside of my “comfort zone” yet again, overwhelmed with the people, the size of the gym, and the number of different equipment and classes that were available.  I then joined a much smaller gym, but didn’t make the kind of progress that I had hoped for.  I knew that I still wanted to give strength training a good shot, but was looking for other solutions.

That’s when I decided to give personal training a try.  Eventually, I made my way to BodySmith Personal Training in 2018.  It has been a huge benefit to have the personal attention and direction provided to me by my trainer Kat Williams. Additionally, the owner, Scott Smith, meets with me periodically to set goals and work with me on my nutrition. My plan has been customized – and continues to be – to fit my goals and to push me to new levels.  I have gotten stronger on all of my lifts, increased lean muscle mass, AND lost body fat.  The investment of time and money that I place in BodySmith has been well worth it to me.  The knowledge of the trainers, along with the great facilities, has been an awesome experience for me!

Prior to working with BodySmith, I had problems with consistency and strength building. I had fallen trap to the grind of professional life, focusing a majority of my time and energy on the advancement of my career, business, and team. In that world, you could say that I had been successful. In regards to my physical and mental health, you could say that I had been neglectful.

I knew that I needed to re-balance my life and start making positive investments in my health, so that I could be even more productive, but more importantly, all around healthier and fitter. A more accurate representation of how I view myself.

I started out on my own, relying on cardio and food logging to kick-start my necessary weight loss journey. It quickly became evident that I was missing the strength training component (that I now understand to be pivotal to sustained weight control and healthy body composition). Not to mention, I really needed the accountability of an outside force, to force me out of the office and into the gym.

When I first came in to work with my trainer at BodySmith, I was worried that I would not be able to complete a workout. Now, as I’ve cycled through a full year, I have seen progress in every facet of my health. I’m stronger across the board on all my lifts (never thought I could leg press over 400 pounds!). I’ve lost body fat and increased lean muscle mass. I even have better posture and mobility. I used be scared about doing exercises that require knee bending, and now I’m lunging back and forth across the gym with added weights!

BodySmith has also been flexible with my crazy travel schedule. I would certainly recommend them to other busy professionals, like myself, who need to outsource a little accountability in the health department of their otherwise successful lives.

TOP TRANSFORMATIONS OF 2016-2017!

Deborah Murphy

Sharing my story takes me back to a time in my life that I’m not particularly proud of.  At 235 pounds, I was a single parent who didn’t think much of herself.  I had zero self confidence and found that food offered some sort of misguided comfort.  Or so it seemed at the time.  I was like any other woman fighting obesity.  Hiding behind the closest child while someone snapped a photo during the holidays.  Stressing over what to wear to the office picnic.  Facing the mirror on Monday mornings, swearing that today was the day I’d make a change.  Finally, one particular Monday, my reflection and I had a conversation that made the difference, and I set myself on a path to lose 100 pounds.

Fast forward about eight years of maintaining the weight loss to when a friend told me about a trainer she had started working out with named Scott Smith.  I decided that it was finally time to turn my attention to strengthening and toning my body, and facing a place that had historically been an intimidating environment.  The gym.  I had no idea at the time that not only would Scott provide me with the knowledge and tools to maintain my weight in a healthy way while building strength, but also, that together, Scott and I would face one of the most life changing battles of my life.

In November, 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Without question, the work Scott and I had been doing in the gym over the course of the prior year made it possible for me to not only deal with the physical trauma of surgeries and recovery, but it also provided me with the mental fortitude to get back into the gym and to keep working on strengthening my body and my mind.  I can’t even begin to imagine being diagnosed with cancer when I was 100 pounds heavier, let alone being diagnosed with cancer when I literally didn’t have the physical strength to fight that fight.  I’m so grateful that I made the decision to invest in myself and that Scott was there to help motivate and guide me. It made all the difference in the world.

I’m not going to lie.  There are days that I’d genuinely prefer to sleep in or go out with friends after work when I’m actually scheduled to be in the gym.  But that’s precisely why I make the financial and emotional investment into a trainer.  Scott holds me accountable.  And without even realizing he’s doing it, he gives me the encouragement to do “just one more.”

I had been on the road constantly for work for the last 7 years, and my weight and health reflected that. After some prodding from my wife Karleen, I decided to commit to working out regularly.  I knew after neglecting my health for so long, I would need the help of a professional, and that’s where BodySmith Personal Training (more specifically, Scott Smith, came in).

I started working out with Scott three times each week, and eventually advanced to four and occasionally five times per week. Our goals ranged from increasing my power lifts, losing body fat, gaining lean mass, and simply staying consistent with our routine without getting injured.

Personally, I found that I really enjoyed the progressive resistance training, the stress reduction, and the strength gains. But additionally, my health across a multitude of areas was dramatically improved. In a matter of months…

–  My resting heart rate went from 87 beats per minute to 67 bpm

–  My bloodwork went from pre-diabetic to normal

–  I was able to stop taking high blood pressure medicine for the first time in a decade.

–  My doctor was amazed when I came in for my annual physical and had lost 35 pound of fat,  and added 10 pounds of lean muscle.

I would not have thought it possible for me to make changes like this in my late 40’s, but Scott & his team make the impossible possible every day.

In my 20’s, I aspired to be a model and have that body type – you know, the emaciated look. I could wrap my fingers around my biceps they were so skinny. And I was proud of that. I’m 5’10” and my lightest weight was 113lbs. I was anorexic. Fortunately, I overcame my eating disorder.

In my 30’s and 40’s, I tried to manage the normal weight gain most women experience as they age by doing excessive amounts of cardio (an hour or more a day.) However, there is a saying, “you can’t outrun your fork”, and in 2014, my body fat hit an all time high.

That’s when I started working out with Scott, Kat and Kent and made a paradigm shift about my body. In order to burn body fat, I needed to increase lean muscle mass and focus more on my resistance training and healthy diet (not more cardio). To stay motivated with this new workout regimen we focused more on improving my fitness levels in the weight room which is way more fun than putting in hours on the hamster wheel.  Now, my priority is to be strong and healthy!

These days I look forward to my training sessions and get excited to set new PRs (personal record). I actually need to eat MORE (healthy) foods to fuel my body so that I have the energy to squat 135lbs or deadlift 160lbs.

Strength training has not only transformed by body, but more importantly, it is helping me slow the aging progress by building bone density and muscle mass, both of which we lose as we get older. I’m 51 and I’m the strongest I’ve ever been! I can no longer wrap my fingers around my biceps and I’m proud of it! #lovemymuscles

TOP TRANSFORMATIONS OF 2015-2016!

Drew TestimonialDrew Smith

My journey with BodySmith starts with New Years Day 2014. I had really let myself go after several years of swinging back and forth between regular exercise and laziness. The low point was having to buy a pair of pants with waist size 40.

I had been wanting to work with Scott, who is my brother, since he started training several years before that, but I lived in Lawrence and worked in Topeka, so it never worked out with my schedule. But, on New Years Day 2014, Scott started his online “New Years Kickstarter Challenge”, and I decided to seize the opportunity and finally get in control of my weight. I was one of the most active participants in this challenge. I became devoted to cardio and nutrition, and lost about 20 pounds. All of my old clothes fit again, and I felt a ton better, but I still plateaued.

I have dealt with anxiety and depression my entire life, and regular exercise has proven to be the best medicine for me. Some big changes in my career and personal life led me to re-dedicate myself with the 2015 New Years Challenge. And I kept it up. I lost 30 more pounds, and have kept it off. It felt so good to have friends and coworkers notice the change.

I moved to Kansas City in the summer of 2015 and my fiancee Megan and I have been training with Scott and Kat twice a week since last fall. The final piece of the puzzle turned out to be a switch in my focus toward increased metabolism and athleticism via their core/resistance training program. With their guidance and support I have maintained my weight while increasing my strength and muscle mass. I look forward to my training sessions, and the help and motivation that Scott and Kat provide.

BrianTestimonial 2Brian Ross

It was last summer that I decided to start making the changes necessary to live a healthier lifestyle. At the time, I wasn’t even sure what that really meant. I just knew that years of traveling for work (and a lot of other excuses) had put me at the heaviest and most out of shape I’d ever been. I downloaded MyFitnessPal and began tracking what I ate in order to manage my calories, but with no real strategy behind it. I began walking, which eventually transitioned into light jogging, and saw some improvement. Fast forward a few months, and all of a sudden the progess came to a screeching halt. I was doing all of the same things that I had been doing that had led to the initial weight loss, but now the scales weren’t moving. Discouraged, frustrated, but not defeated, I sought out a solution for my lack of progress.

A good friend had been raving about the personal trainer he had been seeing for the past year. I was intimidated by the prospect of taking that step, as I hadn’t done anything exercise related (beyond the light cardio) in years. But with my friends encouragement, I arranged a meeting with Scott and explained my situation. He talked of terms I had heard of, but really had no clue what they meant. Things like body fat percentage, lean body mass, and what the heck is metabolic conditioning? He explained that my lack of recent progress was probably due to my metabolism dropping due to the calorie restrictions I had put in place, and began formulating a strategy to break through it. Still a bit skeptical, I took the leap of faith and began training with Scott and Kat. I immediately knew that this was what was going to get me past my plateau.

What I wasn’t expecting was what came next. Note only did my weight loss resume, but I began adding muscle as well. Even if my weight was remaining stable for a period of time, clothes fit better, I had more energy, and my measurements were still shrinking! I began to think about my health success in terms that I had never previously fathomed. Namely, achieving an overall level of fitness and not worrying about what the scale said every week. We started focusing on actions that I had more control over and were immensely more enjoyable to pursue.

I now train with Kat three times a week, and follow a specific diet plan developed by Scott, that not only focuses on cycling my calorie intake, but also establishes targets for macro nutrients aimed at building muscle and reducing fat. I began meal prepping and planning everything I ate to make the whole process easier and avoid old pitfalls. Now I know exactly what I’m going to eat and when I’m going to eat it everyday. I’m down a total of 60 pounds, and I’ve never felt better! As Scott says, it’s important to change one thing at a time and not overwhelm yourself. Before you know it, your entire life will be transformed.

What’s really exciting is the next phase. I’m already at a place I’d never thought I could be, but with Scott and Kat’s guidance, I have new goals in mind that didn’t seem possible a year ago. I think back to how intimidated I was before my first few sessions, and now it seems silly. Today I love the challenge and can’t wait for my workout sessions with Kat. I’m thankful for both of my trainers, I couldn’t have done it without you!

Whitney TestimonialWhitney Kinnison

When I was in elementary school, I realized that my thighs were twice the size of the girls around me and I immediately decided I should eat as much junk food as possible to maintain my thunder thigh status, never taking into account that maybe my five inch height difference played a part of my thickness. From that point on, I had a complex about my body. I deemed it undesirable, huge, ugly and treated it that way.

I was always extremely active in sports. When I joined a softball team in college, I was working as hard as I could to maintain a spot on the team. I thought to myself, this is the best shape I’ll ever be in. And while my exercise was built in for me due to my involvement with sports, the junk food habits were still alive and stronger than ever, holding me back from my true physical and mental potential. Despite knowing the necessary effort it would take to reach the pinnacle I could never quite seem to get there.

Once college ended, the ease of just showing up to practice to count as exercise disappeared, a series of unfortunate events and my love for pizza rolls still going strong, the pounds came on quickly.  It wasn’t until after I gained 50 pounds that I thought, “It’s time to do something different.” Slowly but surely, I changed my eating habits, kept active in softball, and even had a couple of trainers. I had successfully dropped more than half the weight before my progress eventually plateaued.

Enters Scott and Kat. Since joining them in late 2015, my mindset of wanting to lose weight quickly changed to wanting to gain more muscle. Their training techniques are different from any training I had received before, and the program seemed to work perfectly for me. No longer was I obsessing about numbers on the scale, but working hard to improve my numbers with weight-lifts and sets. Scott and Kat do a great job on accountability, teaching proper form, and pushing you to get that extra rep when you’re almost positive that it’s impossible. I’m in even better shape than I was in college, and I can’t thank them enough from changing my mindset that was once so negative into seeing my body as a lean, wonderful, fighting machine. I am so excited to see continued progress with Scott and Kat and highly recommend them to anyone who is ready to make a change physically and mentally.

TOP TRANSFORMATIONS OF 2014-2015!

Ling Transformation

Ling Tjoeng

A few years ago I was sitting on a beautiful Hawaiian beach with my 2-year-old niece.  I should have been soaking up life, but instead of being happy I was miserable.    I didn’t like how I looked or how I felt.  I couldn’t keep up with my niece and play with her the way I wanted.   I was setting a bad example of health and fitness  … I was living a life that was less than what I was capable of living … and I knew that if I continued down that road, it was only going to get worse.

That’s when I made the decision to work with Scott.   My goals:  get healthy … lose weight … reduce body fat … build strength!

Scott got it.  He understood the dream I had.  He also understood how to handle all the challenges I faced … including the fact that I was diabetic.

We began working out one-on-one three times a week, then we added cardio a few days a week.   Scott worked with me to get my nutrition back on course, helping me find the right “formula” of carbs/fat/protein for me.    Together we set aggressive fitness and fat-loss goals and I’m proud to say I’ve achieved so much more than I ever thought I could.  I’ve also set so many PRs that my confidence is now sky-high compared to where it was when I started.

Scott gave me the inspiration and motivation I desperately needed to turn my life around.  The accountability and consistency made all the difference in the world.

In many ways, Scott gave me my life back.  Words can’t express how grateful I am for that precious gift.

I began training with Scott at BodySmith six months ago with the goal of being able to get back into shape and to win a family weight loss challenge.  Scott and I discussed my goals and he helped me design an aggressive program to meet them.  With his personalized approach to my training and lifestyle, both inside and outside of the gym,  I have far exceeded even my own expectations.

Starting out I was 5’9”, 200 pounds,  at 22% body fat. After signing on at BodySmith,  I’ve lost 34 pounds and dropped my body fat percentage to 9.3%.  All the while, increasing my strength and cardio levels.  I am now in the best mental and physical shape of my life!

What makes Scott different from other trainers is his ability to tailor your program to your specific goals.  Scott is there every step of the way to ensure you reach them.  He even went as far as to send me personalized outside of the gym workouts (aka my “homework”),  in addition to providing me a meal plan and sound nutritional advice.

While my workouts are of course demanding,  I do look forward to them, and even more than that,  I look forward to where I will be in the next 6 months!   Thank you for everything Scott, my wife and I both appreciate it!

I started having issues with my weight dating back to elementary school.  As an adult I’ve tried diets too numerous to mention, some pretty extreme and/or even dangerous and by 40 I was diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea and was put on a CPAP machine.

In addition to sleep apnea, my cholesterol was high and my triglycerides were even higher. The extra weight was also taking a toll on my back, joints, and emotions.  I had countless reasons to be happy yet I was miserable.  I used my weight as an excuse for everything and built a prison with it in which I was not only the prisoner, but also the warden.

I was less than a year away from my 50th birthday and that’s when I made the decision that I was not going to turn 50 being so out of shape.

I began researching personal trainers on the Internet and that’s how I discovered Scott and BodySmith Personal Training. He was a lot younger than me and I thought “there is no way he will be able to relate to my weight issues and understand what I’m going through.” I assumed he would be yet another fit person who would tell me I just needed to eat less and exercise more as if it were that simple and had never occurred to me before. I took a leap anyway…

As Scott and I discussed my weight issues and goals during our initial consultation, he was convinced if I gave him the chance, we would develop a customized program together that would teach me healthy eating and exercise habits so I would be able to lose the weight AND keep it off.

Fast forward 14 months and I’m still training with Scott twice a week.  I have lost weight while building lean muscle mass bringing my total weight loss to date to around 130 pounds.  I have more muscle tone now than I have ever had, all my blood work is well within the normal limits and I am off the CPAP machine!  I’ve donated boxes and boxes of clothes to Goodwill as the pounds and inches have come off, but I kept a few things to serve as reminders of how far I have come.

I have absolutely no regrets about contacting Scott (although he does scare me sometimes when he comments on the goals he has set for me!) Thank you so much Scott for all your unwavering support, encouragement and understanding in helping me take back control of my weight and my life!  You and your fitness program are amazing and I am forever grateful!

I’ve been working with Scott, on and off, for seven years now.  He initially helped me get in shape so that I could pursue my dream to play professional basketball.  I was offered several opportunities after my career at Rockhurst to do this, but I had to overcome several significant injuries (ACL and shoulder) and some subsequent weight gain in order to become competitive again.

Scott developed a sports specific program to increase my endurance and explosiveness with an added focus on eliminating deficiencies in my core stabilization.  All of this was run concurrent with a diet plan aimed to reduce body fat.  It worked.  I was able to lose significant weight while also regaining my confidence to be an aggressor on the court.  Whenever one of my in game dunks is now caught on tape, I like to send it over to Scott to say thank you for pushing me to be my best again!

This “before and after” picture is actually from our most recent round of training.  Whenever I find myself falling behind in regards to my physique or health, I call Scott up and we get back in the gym. His accountability helps me show up at 5:30am ready to work hard.  His positive motivation works perfectly to inspire the athlete I still have within me.  Just this year we were able to lose over 15 pounds and 5% body fat, while still making gains on all of my power lifts.  I would recommend BodySmith Personal Training to anyone serious about building a better body.
